Ireland has given us grand laments and happy tunes, dirges and dances. This compilation album focuses on 6/8 time jigs, 4/4 time reels, slower 4/4 time maritime hornpipes, and set dances (square dances). As in any compilation, some tracks are better than others but dances and moods are well represented. Performers include the group Golden Bough, the fiddler Kieran Fahy, another fiddler Florie Brown, and guitarist and banjo player Noel McLouglin. Thus, the tempo is ever upbeat, as is the corners of the listener's lips. Additional instruments to violins and guitar are flutes, uilleann pipes, accordion, banjo, and bhodhram drum. The album is pleasant throughout, and although there is no jaw-dropping arrangements, there is much sweetness. No vocals are included. The conveyed atmosphere is not of a lively tavern, but of a proper town dance. Instead of the popular concert hall craft of Altan or Lúnasa, we hear, in the main, the simple directness of flawless folk ensembles.
